The Internet (and computers) are excellent tools, but like any tool it can be abused.
The Freedom and Openness of the Internet extends those benefits to good and bad guys unfortunately.
With a few general tips it is easy to protect your organization and your shareholders from serious threats.

Include data security and risk management as criteria when selecting a transfer agent

Encourage your shareholders to keep their address and other information up-to-date

Send a first class mailing each year and follow up on items returned by the Postal Service to minimize accounts that become “lost” – this can lead to escheatment as well as increase the risk of identity theft

monitor their accounts to protect against any fraudulent activity
