1 THE STATE OF C3R

2 Why was the Coalition created?
The Coalition was created because many high school students are graduating without a reading, writing and mathematics foundation appropriate for college-level coursework and careers. This material deficit in academic skills renders pursuit of college-level occupational or academic programs difficult. The C3R was formed to address this situation and has been in existence since 2014 What is the objective of C3R? C3R is a coalition of concerned individuals and organizations in the tri-county area; Ingham, Clinton, and Eaton counties working together to increase the college and career readiness of high school graduates. To create best practices that can be adapted with fidelity and used across the tri-county area resulting in college and career readiness.

3 The Challenge… In % of Michigan eleventh graders met all ACT college readiness benchmarks

4 The Model we used…. C3R is modeled after Elgin’s Alliance for College Readiness Established 2006 Works collaboratively in teams to ensure high school graduates are ready for college-level courses Members work in faculty/staff teams Elgin Community College was recognized with the 2012 Bellwether Award, education’s equivalent to football’s Heisman Trophy

5 How will C3R reach our goal:
Using the Community Impact Framework: Broad Ranging Stakeholders Common Agenda C3R will: Ascertain gaps between high school and first –year college readiness skills Increase academic success for students prekindergarten (PK) to postsecondary Improve college readiness and reduce the number of high school students in the tri-county area requiring developmental coursework

While the program continues to utilize collaborative partnerships with stakeholders in the tri-county area, the structure of the Coalition has evolved. We learned that we were ambitious in our attempt to establish 7 action teams and with the help of the C3R Advisory Council we have streamlined our teams down to 3 to better facilitate efficiency, adaptability and opportunities for growth Current

10 Process Improvements To further assist C3R with continued process improvement, a SWOT Analysis was conducted in three (3) phases during the 2016/17 summit year. The first phase in April 2016 analyzed the strengths of the Coalition. The second phase in October 2016 examined the weaknesses, and during the January 2017 summit we examined the opportunities and threats of the Coalition. A “State of C3R Report” will be produced for the January 2018 Summit

11 C3R Projects

12 C3R Summer Bridge The program was implemented in 2014 to create a model that can be adopted by high schools to address academic gaps. The next two slides evaluate the relevance of the program’s effectiveness and potential for replication, as well as measures the academic persistence of the students. This report covers 2014, 2015 and 2016 summer, fall and spring semesters, and monitors the progress of the two cohorts Summer 2014 and 2015 consisted of a total of 37 students. The C3R Summer Bridge Program students matriculate from a variety of schools in the tri-county area. Students are selected and referred to C3R from counselors, teachers, community members and the HOPE and Lansing Promise programs. . The data persistence report will be used to evaluate the programs relevance towards the long term goals of the coalition.
