3 Sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers
Aero East Competition Sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers Objective is to fly “revenue” generating passengers and their luggage Must make accurate predictions of passenger capacity and weight Scoring affected by empty seats and incorrect ratio of passengers to luggage weight Most design work completed by outgoing group Concentrated on manufacturing techniques and actual construction of the airframe

4 Wing Construction Bulk of the wing design finished by previous group
Basic wing structure completed by previous group Method of wing section joining had to be designed

5 Wing Construction Wing Joiner 3 piece wing for transportation
Outboard sections joined at spars Joiner design tested and final design agreed upon

6

7 Wing joined for the first time

8 Wing Construction Leading edge D tubes formed and installed
Aileron servo mounts designed and installed Ailerons designed and constructed Spoiler servo mounts designed and installed

9 Installing Leading edge D tube sheeting

10 Wing leading edge D-Tube

11 Wing Construction Wings Covered Wing Control surfaces installed
Winglets manufactured and installed Wing-Fuselage interface will be constructed after fuselage construction is complete Landing gear mounts and luggage bay incorporated in Wing-Fuselage interface

12 Covering Wings and Control Surfaces

13

14 Empennage Constructed using plywood jigs manufactured with department Shop-Bot Elevator and Rudder control surfaces constructed and installed Servo mounts and servos installed Linkages completed Construction 100% complete

15

16 Fuselage Construction
Semi-Monocoque design constructed using frames and longerons/stringers Construction of frames intended to be balsa laminated in a shaped jig Planning and design of jigs proceeded to an advanced state Ultimately rejected in favor of laser cut plywood frames

17 Example Fuselage frame construction Jig

18 Overview of Fuselage without Sheeting

19 Fuselage Construction
Jigs were used to construct the fuselage Cut using Department Shop bot from plywood Jig ensured all frames were vertical and located at the correct fuselage station Kept keel structures aligned and oriented correctly

23 Other Construction tasks
Landing gear Stress analysis completed. Gear purchased and will be modified by ODU Machine Shop Luggage Bay Material received and in Machine Shop for manufacture of parts and payload plates Transportation cages and trailer modifications All drawings and design work completed Materials received and construction will begin in two weeks

24 Current Roadblocks As we assemble the aircraft, some mis-alignment of components has been encountered Some detail work has not been modeled yet

25 Tasks remaining Finish construction
Finish and submit SAE competition report Test flights Refine design as necessary Compete and win!
