1910: Japanese Occupation – Japan annexes Korea and subjects it to a
brutal 35-year rule ( )
1945: Division – After Japan’s defeat in World War II, the Korean Peninsula is divided, Soviet troops occupy the north and U.S. forces the south.
1948: Two Nations – after U.N. - sponsored elections, South Korea is under military rule; North Korea forms a Communist state, with Kim Il Sung as Premier.
1950: War - The Korean War begins when North Korea invades South Korea. American-led U.N. troops join on the South Korean side; Chinese troops fight alongside the North Koreans.
 1953: Ceasefire – The war ends in a stalemate, with a ceasefire but no peace treaty. Tens of thousands of U.S. troops remain in South Korea to guard against another invasion.

11. 1988: Elections - After 20 years of military rule, elections are held in South Korea, ushering in its current period of democracy and rapid industrial growth 1994: Kim Jong IL – After Kim Il Sung’s death, his son Kim Jong Il becomes North Korea’s dictator. The country remains closed off from the world. 1995: Famine – When its state–run economy can’t produce enough food, North Korea suffers famine; hundreds of thousands die. Reports of food shortages continue today. 2006: A Nuclear Power – North Korea performs an atomic weapons test, it has become a nuclear power, despite efforts by the U.N and the U.S to prevent it. 2010: Boom and Bust – While South Korea is an economic powerhouse, North Korea is destitute. 2012: Kim Jong Il dies and his son, Kim Jong-un takes over at the age of 29.
