NORTH KOREA & SOUTH KOREA TIMELINE
1910: Japanese Occupation – Japan annexes Korea and subjects it to a brutal 35-year rule ( ) 1945: Division – After Japan’s defeat in World War II, the Korean Peninsula is divided, Soviet troops occupy the north and U.S. forces the south. 1948: Two Nations – after U.N. - sponsored elections, South Korea is under military rule; North Korea forms a Communist state, with Kim Il Sung as Premier. 1950: War - The Korean War begins when North Korea invades South Korea. American-led U.N. troops join on the South Korean side; Chinese troops fight alongside the North Koreans. 1953: Ceasefire – The war ends in a stalemate, with a ceasefire but no peace treaty. Tens of thousands of U.S. troops remain in South Korea to guard against another invasion.

1988: Elections - After 20 years of military rule, elections are held in South Korea, ushering in its current period of democracy and rapid industrial growth 1994: Kim Jong IL – After Kim Il Sung’s death, his son Kim Jong Il becomes North Korea’s dictator. The country remains closed off from the world. 1995: Famine – When its state–run economy can’t produce enough food, North Korea suffers famine; hundreds of thousands die. Reports of food shortages continue today. 2006: A Nuclear Power – North Korea performs an atomic weapons test, it has become a nuclear power, despite efforts by the U.N and the U.S to prevent it. 2010: Boom and Bust – While South Korea is an economic powerhouse, North Korea is destitute. 2012: Kim Jong Il dies and his son, Kim Jong-un takes over at the age of 29.

the North Korean gov’t ignores and denies the existence of street children the outside world is walled off from the pain and suffering official/ authorized tours are given to outsiders...censoring what is seen or heard... depicting a utopian society Propaganda image is everything....promoting a European world Kim Jong-Un on state/ gov’t tv promotes his communist gov’t sons and daughters of the elite are well fed and taken care of
