The Circulatory System
2
Function Transport nutrients and O2 to the cells
Transport CO2 to lungs Regulate/distribute heat from hot spots (liver, brain) to the rest of the body Regulate pH of tissue fluid Circulate hormones Create blood clots to seal wounds Fight infection
3
The Circulatory System
Three main Components: Blood: Type of connective tissue made up of cells and liquid, carries both nutrients and wastes. Heart: The pump Blood Vessels: The pipes
4
Non-Human Circulatory Systems
Open Circulatory Systems: Many invertebrates Blood is not contained within blood vessels E.g. Grasshopper Tubular heart pumps blood through vessels that open into spongy chambers called sinuses. In the sinuses, the blood bathes the body tissues then collects in another set of sinuses to return to the heart. Closed Circulatory Systems: Contained within blood vessels More efficient because blood can be pumped under higher pressure
