The Circulatory System
By: Sasha Bailey, Makayla Hagley, Dimitris Stefanidis and Kevyn Padgett of 703
2
Basics and Major Functions
Maintaining fluid balance within the body Transportation of nutrients , gasses , and waste products Maintenance of constant body temperature ( AKA Thermoregulation ) Protection from infections and blood loss Hormone delivery
3
Components of Blood Plasma - The yellowish liquid in blood that carries molecules from broken down food Red Blood Cells - They take up oxygen in the lungs and deliver it to cells elsewhere in the body White Blood Cells - They are the body’s disease fighters Platelets - They are cell fragments that play a large roll forming blood clots
4
The Path of Blood Blood travels through the body when the heart
relaxes between heartbeats. The blood goes to the lungs to get oxygen and then circulates through- out the body.
5
Major Parts and Their Functions
Arteries: carry oxygenated blood Capillary: brings in and out blood
6
How the Circulatory system works with other systems
It works closely with the digestive system to get absorbed nutrients from food to get distributed throughout the body It works with the respiratory system to ensure that organ tissues receive enough oxygen It works with the immune system to fight off disease with white blood cells
7
Fun Facts If all the blood vessels in your body were joined end to end, they would wrap around the world almost two and a half times The heart beats an average of 3 billion times in the average human’s life About 8 million blood cells die in the human body every second, and the same amount are born each second Within a tiny droplet of blood, there are 5 million red blood cells
