Self esteem Personality Accomplishments Recreational Activities Abilities and Skills Goal Setting

2 Self Esteem What is self esteem? According to the dictionary it is: “Confidence in one’s own abilities or worth; self respect” Sometimes your self esteem can change based on your daily interactions and experiences. How well you did on a test Getting a correct or incorrect answer Relationships Sports

3 Self Esteem: Poor vs. Healthy
Poor or Unhealthy: Rely on how they are doing in the present to determine how they feel about themselves. Need positive compliments to counteract the constant negative feeling about yourself. Compliments, good grades and accomplishments only provide temporary boost in self-esteem. Tend to be negative Healthy: Able to acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses and still be happy with themselves. Acceptance of self Understanding and embracing self worth Do not put value in other’s negative opinions Able to take criticism in a positive manner

4 Accomplishments: Writing down and acknowledging your accomplishments can put into perspective all the great things you have done. Recognizing your accomplishments can help to raise yourself esteem! Accomplishments to consider: Clubs and organizations your are apart of have won competitions in School activities Sports Grades Helping others Assignments and tasks you have completed Fears you have overcame Write down 5 of your accomplishments!

5 Recreational Activities
Recreational activities are things you do for fun. So, outside of school, what do you do for fun or enjoyment. Identifying your recreational activities helps you to see other aspects of your personality. Recreational activities are also great because they can be stress relievers and help to cheer you up or calm you down during tough times. This is known as a positive coping skill. Write down at least 3 of your favorite recreational activities.

6 Abilities and Skills Abilities and Skills are qualities of being able to do something that can be learned through experience or training. Ability Example: some people have musical ability in which they can perform or understand music well. Even with little or no direction. Skill Example: some people have scientific skills that they learned through science class, science clubs or outdoor recreational activities. These skills were developed and refined over time.

7 Personality: Definition: the combination or qualities that form an individuals' distinctive character. Understanding your personality helps you to identify your strengths and weakness. Take color personality test! Once you have taken your personality test, write down 5 words that describe you!

8 Goal Setting: Why set goals? Give you a direction to work towards
Clear picture of where you want to go Give you motivation and focus Help you to push yourself Help you to have fun and lead a more fulfilling life Research has shown that people who set goals and use them effectively are more successful and suffer from less stress and anxiety.

9 Goal Setting Activity #1:
Goal Setting Quiz Let’s set some goals! Goal Setting Activity #1 Which subjects would you like to try and improve this year and why? How much would you like to improve your results by? (List a percentage, grade or target) What could you do this year in order to improve in particular subject? Listen? Stay on task? Ask questions?

10 Goal Setting: Long Term vs. Short Terms
Ask your self: What are you looking forward to doing or achieving tomorrow? What are you looking forward to doing or achieving in the next year? What are you looking forward to doing or achieving in 10 years? Often our short, medium and long terms goals are related. It is best to first think of your long term goals and then set your medium and short term goals.

11 Goal Setting Activity #2:
Your job is to set 1 long term goal. Next you need to set 1 medium and 1 short term goals that will help you to meet your long term goal. Think about: Career Sports Self Improvement Graduating for High School College Friends

12 How to set realistic goals: Think SMARTIES
Specific- detail Measurable – measure whether or not you have reached your goal As if now- As though you have already achieved them Realistic – Do not make goals impossible Timebound- Timeframe on when you will achieve this goal Interesting- Make your goals about something worthwhile Emotional- Use powerful language Success – Express your goals in a positive way
