3 High Frequency Words “Rainbow Words” Your child will be learning to recognize and read 72 high frequency words. For example: and, is, the, we, I, go, here, a Ways to practice heart words at home: Make flashcards with each word Identify them in books you read to our with your child Practice writing them in chalk, crayon, paint, marker, etc. Use post-it notes to stick on the wall, use a fly swatter to whack words as they read them, use a flashlight in the dark to read the words Sight word videos on youtube (Harry Kindergarten) Sight word online games

4 Mclass Assessed beginning, middle, and end of the year
Dibels: Letter naming fluency, phoneme segmentation fluency, first sound fluency, nonsense word fluency TRC Information sent home Tuesday

5 Reports will go home in orange folders Tuesday!

8 Developing Writing Skills
Use a combination of drawing and writing to express ideas with supporting details in writing multiple sentences about a topic. Provide reactions or reflections on a topic. Correctly form upper and lowercase letters. Use consistent punctuation and spacing. Use capitalization correctly. Spell sight words correctly. Spell simple words using dominant sounds. Write legibly. 8

9 Math Develop number sense to 20 (Read, write, represent number of objects with a written numeral, greater than, less than) Compose and decompose numbers ( into 10’s and ones.) Fluently add and subtract within 5 Count to 100 (by 1’s and 10’s, count on from any given number) Identify and describe shapes (two and three dimensional, circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, hexagons, cones and cylinders)

10 Standards Based Grading
Level 4 Extends targets grade level standards- “Since I can do/get this, I can figure out new things.” 3 Demonstrates proficiency of targeted grade level standards. “I get it!” “I can do it well!” 2 Needs support to meet targeted grade level standards. “I almost get it but I need help.” 1 Insufficient performance of targeted grade level standards. “I don’t get it yet. I need your help.” P This work is not being assessed. “I am practicing a new skill.” These grades DO NOT correlate to A, B, C etc.

11 PTA Please JOIN the PTA! The PTA provides wonderful materials and special programs for our school. There will be a PTA Kick Off party for the families of HGES…more information will be coming soon!

12 Volunteers All volunteers must be cleared through WCPSS before working with students in the classroom Field trip chaperones must also be cleared by WCPSS Our computers are set up to sign up today if you would like Must be done BEFORE OCTOBER 31st! I will send a Google Form to sign up for volunteers

13 Lunch Bunch Lunch and reading with your child and 3 classmates!
Must be a registered volunteer Send a message the day before Begins 2nd Quarter

14 Field Trips We will take 2 off-campus field trips this year! We will be going to the North Carolina Zoo! We will also have a walking field trip to the local fire station (down the street)! Dates to be announced at a later time. Great opportunity to chaperone!!! The PTA will also provide 2 on-campus science field trips. No chaperones will be needed for those dates. 14

15 Conferences There will be two parent/teacher conferences this year (Fall & Spring). Report cards will be sent home at the end of each quarter. Interims will be sent in the middle of each quarter, except for 1st Quarter.

As a teacher, I will: Post important updates and announcements Share photos and videos of our classroom activities Students can also share their classwork on their own digital portfolio. Only their family will be able to view their work.

Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest Have your child eat a filling breakfast Make sure your child has lunch $ or a packed lunch Please pack 1 labeled snack each day You may send a water bottle each day Send in any supplies you haven’t sent in yet Begin your normal routine for dismissal transportation Make sure to check in on Class Dojo
