1 NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES

2 NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

3 Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy.
NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

4 COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

5 HOW IS COAL MADE ???

6 HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

7 WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COAL AND OIL/GAS?

8 HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

9 RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

10 SOLAR Energy from the sun.
The sun gives energy to plants (photosynthesis) and consumers take in that energy (food web)

11 GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat.
Why is energy from the heat of the Earth renewable?

12 WIND Energy from the wind.
Wind turbine: convert kinetic energy from the wind into electrical energy.

13 Energy from burning organic or living matter (plants and animals)
BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter (plants and animals) Ex. Burning wood

14 WATER or HYDROELECTRIC
Energy from the flow of water. Used to create electricity (hydroelectric)

15 Energy is not created, only transformed
Energy from these resources are transformed from one form of energy to another. What are some examples?
