Scientific study of the process of aging. Social gerontology The study of the nonphysical aspects of the aging process.

3 Three Phases of Late Adulthood
Young – Old 65-74 Usually dealing with adjusting to retirement. Middle – Old 75-84 Usually dealing with declining physical and mental function, dependency and death. Old – Old 85+ Usually dealing with heighted versions of middle – old.

4 Getting Old Multiple things happen as people age.
Mental health declines Physical health declines Often have to become dependent on someone Death (both one’s own and others)

5 Personality adaptation
As we age our personalities have to adapt to our new roles and changing status. Look at the chart on Page 166 of you text book.

6 Alzheimer’s disease One major mental/physical degeneration in old age is Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is an organic condition that results in the progressive deterioration of brain cells. It is slow but steady and usually progress for 8-10 years from first symptoms to death. Early symptoms are inability to remember current events, people and places. Eventually the person become unable to perform basic tasks alone such as eating, going to the bathroom, speaking and movement.

7 Not everything is bad! Many older adults live independent fulfilling lives. Much of it is taking care of their bodies and minds. Staying physically active and healthy is a great way to prolong any affects of major diseases.

8 Assignment On a piece of paper write: 17-39 40-59 60-74 75+
For each age range list 5 goals you wish to achieve during that time period. Then write a brief statement of how you plan to achieve the goals of each age range. (each age range should have a statement that includes each goal!)
