Quotation Marks Pg. 260

What are they? Quotation marks are used to indicate that a statement made by another person is being quoted WORD FOR WORD

Simple Uses Use quotation marks at the beginning and at the end of a direct quotation Bill said, “My favorite sport is baseball.” Use single quotation marks around a quotation within a quotation “President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, ‘Major league baseball has done as much as any one thing in the country to keep up the spirit of the people,’” stated Mr. Thomas.

Divided Quotations Sometimes quotes are broken into two pieces there are two ways to handle this: If the second part is a new sentence capitalize the first letter inside the quotation marks “In July Tim met with Notre Dame,” he said, “Tim will also meet with Ohio State.” If the second part does not make a new sentence then DO NOT capitalize the first letter after the quotation marks “The first game between organized teams,” Mr. Smith said, “was in Hoboken, New Jersey.”

Punctuation Periods and commas always go inside a direct quotation
Question marks go inside or outside based on the following situations: If only what is in the quotation marks is a question, it goes inside “You know you can’t do that right?” he said. If the entire statement is a question, it goes outside Do you think anyone here knows “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”?

Practice Tim said, He is winning by three goals Tim said, “He is winning by three goals.” Do you know where Anne is asked John. “Do you know where Annie is?” asked John. I wonder how many people know The Star Spangled Banner wondered Jim. I wonder how many people know “The Star Spangled Banner” wondered Jim?
