UNIT 4 Grammar Review By: ThereVernalita
2
WOULD USED TO EXAMPLE We can use used to or would when we talk about habits and repeted actions in the past.
3
USED TO EXAMPLE 1. Used to + Infinitive Used to + infinitive is only used in the past: it has no present form. We use it to talk about past habits, states which are now finished, and repeted actions in the past. Example: I used to smoke, but I’ve stopped. She used to be very shy.
4
USED TO EXAMPLE 2. Used to (with permanent state) If we talk about permanent state or siuation (with verbs such as be/think/love/have/want, etc), we can only use used to.
5
WOULD EXAMPLE 1. Form Would is a modal auxiliary verb. There is no –s in the third person singular; questions and negatives are made without do; after would, we use the infinitive without to.
6
WOULD EXAMPLE 2. Meaning We used would as a past form of will, or as a less definite, ‘softer’ form of will. Compere: Example: She will talk to herself for hours. (present habit) She would talk to herself for hours. (past habit)
