12 Short Answer Example What is the function of nature as motif in “Ashputtle”? In “Ashputtle” by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, Ashputtle is often seen communing with nature. The purpose of nature as a motif is to contribute to the reader’s understanding of Ashputtle as a moral and righteous character. Even after her mother’s death, “she went on being good and saying her prayers.” She “wept and prayed” by her mother’s grave three times a day and “when Ashputtle made a wish [a] little bird threw down what she had wished for.” Here, the Grimm brothers show that Ashputtle is as pure and innocent as nature itself.
