What is the function of nature as motif in “Ashputtle”?
In “Ashputtle” by Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, Ashputtle is often seen communing with nature. The purpose of nature as a motif is to contribute to the reader’s understanding of Ashputtle as a moral and righteous character. Even after her mother’s death, “she went on being good and saying her prayers.” She “wept and prayed” by her mother’s grave three times a day and “when Ashputtle made a wish [a] little bird threw down what she had wished for.” Here, the Grimm brothers show that Ashputtle is as pure and innocent as nature itself.
