Hamlet: Film Comparison
Today, we’re going to watch Act 1 from Gregory Doran’s 2009 Hamlet, which is a more modern interpretation. As we watch this version, your first job is to compare the film with the original text, just like yesterday. You should look for differences in characterization, plot, and any cinematic techniques that you think add something “more” that wasn’t present in the text. Once we finish, your job will be to argue which version is “best.”

Hamlet: Film Comparison
After you finish your Venn Diagram, complete your response to the prompt on the back of your handout: Prompt: Now that you have seen Act 1 of both film versions of Hamlet, you should decide which version is the best. Your response should discuss at least three major differences between both film versions – one of which should be Hamlet’s characterization. As you discuss each difference, state which version you preferred and explain why. If you finish your prompt early, you are welcome to finish your character maps or your character journals if you’re not finished yet. Remember, both assignments are due today!
