Heat Loss Comparison: Doors and Windows Adam Piepgrass ME 340 Section 2 Winter 2010
2
Project Outline Predict whether a metal door or double pane window allows for more heat loss using equations from course textbook Measure actual heat loss through a door and window using thermocouple Compare results
3
Prediction Door: Assumptions: – Door is modeled as solid steel – Conduction only method of heat transfer From textbook (Table A.1) – k = 37-60 depending on what type of steel Conclusion – Door would be greater source of heat loss Window: Assumptions: – Window is single pane – Conduction only method of heat transfer From textbook (Table A.3) – k = 1.4 Conclusion – Window would be a lesser source of heat loss
4
Measure Method: – Using thermocouple, measure the surface temperatures of my home door and window Results: Temp. ( C ) DoorWindow Inside Surface Temp.20.618 Outside Surface Temp.14.115.2 Temp difference6.52.8
5
Comparison Prediction: Door would be greater source of heat loss Measure: Door had greatest difference in surface temperatures – door is greater source of heat loss Conclusion: Prediction and actual results are identical
