Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes
2
Physical Properties Physical properties are those that we can determine without changing the identity of the substance we are studying. Examples of physical properties Mass Density Volume Color Odor State of matter Texture
3
Chemical Properties Describe the way a substance can change or react to form other substances. These properties, then, must be determined using a process that changes the identity of the substance. Examples: Flammability-the ability of a substance to burn or ignite Reactivity-the likelihood that a substance will undergo a chemical reaction
4
Physical and Chemical Changes
5
Physical Change Affects one or more physical properties of a substance without changing the identity of the substance. Change in size or volume Change of state of matter Dissolving
6
Chemical Change One or more substances change into a new substance that has different properties. The atoms are rearranged into something new.
7
Evidence of Chemical Change
Production of gas bubbles Unexpected change in color or odor Release of light, sound, or heat Formation of a precipitate
8
Physical and Chemical Changes
Directions: For each picture, decide if it is a physical or chemical change and explain why.
