1 August 31, 2018 Journal 17: Today’s Agenda Journal #17
Chemical and Physical Change Notes Vocabulary Squares Journal 17: Describe the physical and chemical properties of sugar. I can… *Identify a change to be a chemical and physical change.

2 Changes in Matter

3 Physical changes Physical change: any change that alters the form or appearance of a substance but does not change it into another substance Still the same substance after the change Examples? Changes of State Water changes to ice or water vapor Is it still water? Has its chemical composition changed at all?

4 Physical changes are… Often just a phase change
Easily reversible (filtering, evaporation) No new products are formed CAN cause color change

5 Changes in shape or form
Dissolving Filtration Distillation Bending Crushing Breaking Chopping

6 Chemical change Chemical change: a change in matter that produces one or more new substances Atoms rearrange to form new substances Results in different physical properties

7 Chemical changes Light, heat, sound, bubbles can be formed
Reactants are used up Not easily reversed CAN cause color change New products are formed

8 Chemical changes Combustion Electrolysis Oxidation Tarnishing
Natural gas (mostly methane, CH4) combines with oxygen to form CO2 and water vapor Electrolysis Oxidation Tarnishing

9 Chemical changes Statue of Liberty What was the original color?
Iron frame Copper layer (2 pennies thickness) What was the original color? What color is it today? What chemical reaction caused the change in color? How might the patina help the statue?

10 Chemical or physical? You cut a piece of paper into small pieces. Is this a physical or chemical change?

11 Chemical or physical You find a nail on the ground in the parking lot, in a small puddle of water. Rust has formed on the outside of the nail. Was this a physical or chemical change?

12 Chemical or physical? You put gasoline in your car and the car burns the fuel. Is this a chemical or physical change?

13 Chemical or physical? You pick up an ice cream sandwich from the cafeteria and you stick it in your hoodie pocket so your hands are free to pay for your lunch. You run into your friend on your way to your seat and he tells you your science homework is due next period You forget all about your ice cream sandwich…until you pull the plastic full of mush out of your pocket later that afternoon. Is this a chemical or physical change?

14 Chemical or physical You get a can of soda from the vending machine and your “friend” maliciously shakes it when you’re not looking. You open the can of soda and it fizzes all over your desk, making you regret you had brought it to lab in the first place. Is this a chemical or physical change?
