1 Properties and Changes
The difference between Physical and Chemical

2 (Look, Listen, Smell, Taste, & Touch)
Physical Property Physical properties are used to observe and describe matter. Physical properties any characteristics of a material that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter. USE YOUR FIVE SENSES (Look, Listen, Smell, Taste, & Touch) Use this only when your teacher tells you it is safe.

3 Color Odor Texture Shape Physical Property Melting Point
State of Matter Density Boiling Point Shape Odor

4 Changing State of Matter
Physical Change Changing the appearance of matter, but not changing the matter’s composition. (NO NEW SUBSTANCE IS FORMED) Only a change in a Physical Property Changing State of Matter Changing Size Changing Color

5 Chemical Property Chemical properties describe the matter’s "potential" to undergo some chemical change or reaction based on its composition. It is difficult to define a chemical property without using the word “CHANGE”

6 In the correct conditions, some matter could be described as…

7 (Something NEW IS FORMED)
Chemical Change Chemical change is any change that results in the formation of new substances. (Something NEW IS FORMED)

8 Chemical Change Effervescence – Produces a Gas (Alka-seltzer)
Examples Effervescence – Produces a Gas (Alka-seltzer) Explosion – (Light or sound) Oxidation – (Iron Rusting) Decomposition – (Digestion) Combustion – (Burning)
