In the past years the geographic census data were store into file-based structure with all related problems of management, duplication of data, security, …
Geometry is a complex attribute, so to be stored inside a DBMS table it needs a specific software to be managed. Nowadays GIS software can do this, and GIS DB can be managed and integrated inside a DBMS.
