WHAT IS THE ARMY CADET FORCE?
One of the UK’s oldest and largest youth volunteer organisations Over 41,000 cadets aged ,700 local groups (detachments) 57 county groups Over 150 years of history and achievement

OUR PURPOSE Although many of our activities have a military theme and we are funded by Army sponsorship, we are here primarily to: Give young people a broad range of challenging adventurous, sporting and educational activities Help inspire them to achieve success in life and develop the qualities of a good citizen

1st Battalion The Highlanders Twenty-nine detachments across the Highlands & Islands Covering an area equivalent to the size of Belgium 450 cadets from various backgrounds Looked after by over 90 dedicated Adult Instructors and Officers

Extra Training Further to the APC training the ACF offers additional training to improve your skills Some which can add recognised qualifications to your CV..…

Vocational Qualifications Adventurous Training
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Piping & Drumming CFAV’s can take part in AT courses that work towards National Governing Body (NGB) accredited Lowland, Hill Walking, Mountaineering, Rock Climbing, Trail Cycling, Skiing and Paddlesport qualifications with the intention of creating an increasing nucleus of AT qualified instructors/leaders with the skills and experience to deliver safe, fun and progressive activities within the ACF and Senior Cadets (16+) can embark on a pathway to gain a basic Foundation and Intermediate skills qualification in Mountaineering, Rock Climbing, Winter Climbing, Caving, Open Canoeing, Kayaking (Sea & Inland), Skiing (Nordic & Alpine) and Mountain Biking. Army Cadet Force Piping and Drumming activity is structured, progressive and achievable. It offers a sensible approach to learning which also provides maximum opportunity for achievement. The syllabus has been devised to cater for all forms of instrumentation incorporated in the Pipe Band: Bagpipes, High Tension Snare Drum, Tenor Drum and Bass Drum. There are various levels of achievement in total and these are linked directly to the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) syllabus.

Activities & Competitions Army Cadets is not all about training We do a lot of fun sporting activities Some of which have competitions, competing at local level for our Detachment right up to national level representing Scotland or the UK

Germany Overseas Opportunities As a cadet there is a chance of going overseas as part of exchange programmes or events To name a few… France Germany – Saffron Cook (left) and Duncan Kelly (right) during their week long Adventure Training Course in Bavaria in 2016 France – Battalion Battlefield Tour 2017 of Somme at Thiepval Memorial, France Belgium – Cadets from across Battalion Outside the Menin Gate after taking part in ceremony during Battalion’s Battlefield Tour in 2016 Mexico – Ross Tweedie spent 3 weeks doing conservation/charity work in an orphanage Switzerland – Members of our Pipes & Drums played in the Basel Christmas Tattoo Canada – Ross Clarke (far left) took part in a 6 week cadet exchange in Canada In April 2016 representations of cadets and adults of the battalion were in France as apart of the official commemoration team to mark the 100th anniversary of the Arras Offensive in 1917. MYTHS AND FACTS The Army model provides structure Generous sponsorship comes from the same source as the Army’s fund (MOD) BUT WE ARE NOT PART OF THE ARMY Being part of the ACF doesn’t mean having to join the Army There is no pressure on cadets to show further interest Cadets’ interest in a career in the Army Forces is encouraged if this is part of their own plan
