2nd – 6th Rockstars Mahaney January 27-31 Killebrew Rogers
2nd Grade Literacy I can explain how things are similar and different by comparing and contrasting. I can summarize by using my own words to retell the most important parts of a story. I can develop vocabulary. 3rd Grade Literacy I can recognize that a statement that is true for many examples is a generalization. I can use the structure of a story to improve my comprehension. 2nd Grade Science I can describe how flowering plants make seeds. I can explain how plants without flowers grow new plants. 3rd Grade Science I can describe ways to measure force. I can explain how an inclined plane works. I can discover how levers work. 2nd Grade Math - My 2nd graders will be learning different multiplication and division strategies. They will also be solving real-world problems using multiplication and division. Thank you for working with your child on memorizing multiplication facts through 5. 3rd Grade Math - My 3rd grade math class will be using related multiplication facts to divide. They will also be dividing a 1-digit or a 2-digit number with or without regrouping as well as problem-solving. Please continue to work on multiplication facts as well as Compass Learning if you have internet access. :) 2nd Grade Social Studies - The 2nd grade class will be studying about the Civil War and the events that led up to this war. 3rd Grade Social Studies - My 3rd grade Social Studies class will be studying about Canada's location, climate, and major regions as well as the differences and similarities between Canada and the United States. 4th Grade Social Studies - My two 4th grade classes will be studying about Kentucky's years after statehood. January 27-31 Weekly Reminders Monday, February 3rd – 100th Day of School T-shirt orders for Ms. Mahaney's homeroom due February 14th Friday, February 14th – Valentine’s Parties Rogers 4th Grade Literacy – In Literacy class students will continue to learn comprehension skills and strategies to become better readers. This week students will be able to describe the characters and setting of the story. Students will also continue to learn and strengthen their vocabulary and grade level sight work skills. 5th Grade Literacy - In Literacy class students will build upon their prior knowledge of comprehension skills and strategies to become better readers. This week students will be able to draw conclusions about the characters, setting, and plot of a story or passage.

We will be continuing solving Algebraic Equations. We will use the Hands on Equations manipulative as well as the app on the iPads. This is so much fun. We won't want to move on!! 5th grade Social Studies I can compare the American and British forces at the beginning of the Revolutionary War. I can explain key factors that allowed the colonies the defeat the British. I can explain the Treaty of Paris. 5th grade Math I can read and write thousandths using decimals and fractions. I can write a fraction with the denominator of 1000 as a decimal. I can compare and order decimals to three places. Crowder Science - This week in science we will be learning about the rock cycle and characteristics of rocks. Math - This week we will be learning about fractions of a set and completing real world problems involving fractions. Bowen Language Arts - Students will be using a persuasive writing template to determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by the key details and then summarize the text. Rice Writer's Workshop We have finished our first Expository Essay. This week we will dig even deeper as we write our second piece. We will also be working on collaborating with Mrs. Hall's class in creating an illustrated storybook. In Technology, we will be typing our essay and finding out our Lexile score in writing. Daily 5 The focus skill this week is comparing 2 texts. Stories or biographies written about one event or character will be explored as told in different ways and how to pull out the facts and opinions, and why stories are written from different points of view.
