1975: Communist rebels known as the Khmer Rouge set up a brutal Communist government under leadership of Pol Pot Pol Pot’s followers slaughtered 2 million 1978: Vietnamese invaded They overthrew the Khmer Rouge 1989: Vietnamese withdrew 1993: Under supervision of UN, Cambodia adopted a democratic constitution 3

Vietnam After the War After 1975: North Vietnamese imposed tight controls over South Sent thousands of people to “reduction camp” for training in Communist thought Communist oppression caused 1.5 million people to flee Vietnam About 70,000 eventually settled in the US or Canada Vietnam now welcomes foreign investments US normalized relations in Vietnam in 1995 4
