1 Goal: To learn about the possibilities of “space drive”
Objectives: To learn what is space drive To learn where in the universe space drive is actually possible today To learn about the advantages and problems with space drive

2 What is space drive Alcubierre, M., (Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, Univ. of Wales, College of Cardiff CF1 3YB, UK), "The warp drive: hyper-fast travel within general relativity", In Classical and Quantum Gravity, Vol 11, p. L73-L77, (1994). Short answer is, you move space – not through space, and hitch a ride.

3 Is space drive possible?
YES! It HAPPENS

4 Expansion of the universe
Our universe is expanding. This makes distance galaxies appear to move away from us (with velocity = constant * distance) However they do not move, space stretches (expands) If a galaxy were far enough away it would move away from us at faster than the speed of light

5 Inflation In the very early universe (tiny fraction of the first second) the universe underwent a phase transition This phase transition might have been an even larger explosion than the big bang itself The resultant energy mass expanded the universe much faster than the speed of light

6 Kerr Black Holes Kerr Black Holes are black holes with spin.
This gives them a different structure

7 Spin Energy In the distant future you can actually take the spin energy out of a Kerr Black Hole and use it! However the closest black hole is > 1000 light years away so…

8 Advantage Loophole to relativity
You can travel at any velocity you can get the space to travel – without actually moving yourself

9 To be usable One method requires the use of a ring of negative mass energy material. Inside ring has to be equal positive energy mass. However, most calculations show the amount of mass energy required is more than the energy in the known universe. Also, it would have to be put in a ring only m thick.

10 Second method Maybe you can use negative energy electro magnetic fields. It is not sure how you could actually make them

11 Or possibly Use imaginary dimensions or imaginary times

12 Conclusion Space drive is possible, but...
Might not be feasible, realistic, or even the best choice, but possible. However, once again the problem is energy – or a really great understanding of M theory.
