Advanced Sensors Open design challenges Project evaluation

3 LESSON 10

4 LESSON 10 STARTER Above is a photo of an Ultrasonic Range Finder, Can you name any animals that use a type of Ultrasonic sensing?

5 DESIGN CHALLENGE Learning objective: Test and prove your product against set goals to prove functionality. Adapt the design solution to meet the criteria for the product better. Build and program a robot with an Ultrasonic Range Finder….. Scenario: Your robot has been sent to a remote space station and has been dropped off at the far end of the cargo bay. The cargo bay is full of obstacles between where the robot has been dropped and the cargo base exit door. Design and program your robot to self navigate through the cargo bay. Extension task: There is debris floating around the cargo bay in the form of asteroids. If your robot drives into one them the robot will be damaged. Program the robot to navigate the course but stop for 2 seconds if an asteroid floats past, to allow it time to clear the path.

6 DESIGN CHALLENGE Create the following test field

7 Ultrasonic range finder challenge outcome video
DESIGN CHALLENGE Solution Video Watch the video below to see a working outcome. Here is a screen shot of part of the program that will achieve it. Copy this onto the program sheet. Ultrasonic range finder challenge outcome video

8 LESSON 10 PLENARY Ultra sonic range finders are already being used as parking sensors in cars!! Experts predict that it will not be long before a car can drive itself, using a range of sensors. From your experience of working with sensors, what do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of cars using sensors to drive themselves. Be prepared to justify your thoughts

9 SUMMARY Today you have:
Learning objective: Test and prove your product against set goals to prove functionality. Adapt the design solution to meet the criteria for the product better. Today you have: Tested a product that you have designed and made in a team. Recorded your findings during a test process to analyse. Adapted your design based on the results of the test.
