2 ECDIS, FACTS AND FUNCTIONS
What make of ECDIS should you choose and why? Charts – Formats and effective distribution methods Licensing – Today’s challenges and new Pay-As-You-Go Updating - Keeping charts and other types of data updated GUI, Service, Support, Functionality etc.

3 So what make of ECDIS should I buy?
Some things to consider: Global Service network from a reputable company Easy to use User Interface with enhanced functionality Easy to install, license and update charts Synchronization in a network for routes / updates etc. Communications to the outside world Low maintenence / quick fix Upgradeable – manufacturer web side downloads Additional data types – weather, tides, AIS etc. Type specific training Global Service: A well established and reliable system manufacturer with a good product and a worldwide service network. Interface: Easy to use, Easy to understand, and gives you the information you need Install charts and updates: Done in minutes rather than hours. Updates that update you complete database, not just parts of it.

4 What chart format should I use?
An ECDIS, per definition, is only an ECDIS if it uses Official ENC charts issued officially by, or on the authority of, a government authorized Hydrographic Office or other relevant governmental institution. You can use ENC in S-63 (encrypted S-57) format You can use ENC in SENC format So what is a chart format??

5 What is a chart format? It is the type of file that is delivered to the vessel containing the charts. The file format affects: - - The size of files to be transfered to the vessel - The way they are handled by the ECDIS - How easily charts can be licensed and updated. A format can be bulky and difficult to use, or small and optimized for for the job it was intended for. Example: Newspaper Full format newspaper delivered through my letter box. Always too much paper for a small letter box. Ripped and sometimes unreadable. Paper boy not worried about how I would read it – just how he could deliver it and get to his next customer. To big, difficult to read, fell apart etc. Tabloid: Fitted through the letter box, was stapled together, was easily readable anywhere. The publishers finally realised that theyu had to supply the newspaper in an easily distributable and readable form. But the information it contained was identical to the full format newspaper – it was just packaged in a much better way.

8 Charts – SENC distribution and/or S-57?
S-57 is a distribution format designed for the exchange of data between Hydrographic Offices and not for being sent to vessels for use in their ECDIS. Because of this: - - It gets delivered on many CD-ROMs, currently around 8 - it contains thousands of files that the ECDIS has to handle - it has to be converted to a format the ECDIS can use (SENC) - it requires a license for each and every cell We at Jeppesen decided long ago that SENC distribution was a much better concept for everyone. All our products are distributed in a ready-to-use format.

9 SENC Distribution In short, SENC distribution means to take ENC charts in S-57 format, compile them in a controlled office environment to our SENC format (CM-93/3) and distribute the finished product to end users that have an ECDIS that supports our data and services And simply put, this means

10 ENC distribution from Jeppesen
10 min. 10 min. ENC distribution in SENC format One DVD replaces multiple base and update CDs sent to the vessel All ENCs loaded and ready to license No decryption required onboard No verification required onboard No Compilation required onboard (from S-57 to SENC) Simplified licensing Easy updating Type Approved SENC Distribution

11 Chart Licensing – keep it as simple as possible
What does obtaining licenses involve today?? You will need to: - Subscribe to a service and obtain chart DVD/CD-ROM’s Use a chart catalog and try to figure out what you need Choose a format (S-57 or SENC) Send the order and receive the licenses onboard Install the charts and apply the licenses Keep adding new charts and licenses when they arrive onboard Conclusion: A logistical nightmare for everyone! So why not try a pay-as-you-go service? Subscribe to a service and obtain DVD/CD-ROM’s Obtain a chart catalog and try to figure out what you need? Ask a chart dealer or Jeppesen to advise you as to what you need? Do you understand what format should you order (S-57 or SENC)? How do you send the order and receive the licenses? Is it easy to apply these licenses? What happens if ENC’s are terminated or replaced? Do you get the new charts and licenses automatically sent to you? Conclusion: A logistical nightmare onboard and a logistical nightmare for us. So why noy try a pay-as-you-go service

12 ’Pay as you go’ licensing
A user friendly and cost effective method of Licensing, Using and Updating ENC charts in SENC format You only pay for what you use! All ENCs are available onboard at all times Automatic licensing for the minimum period allowed ENC’s that are not used are not re-licensed Replaced ENC’s are automatically licensed Automatic reporting via the C-MAP Update Service Controlled costs via pre-set budgets No complicated logistics for you or us! Dynamic Licensing is a ”Pay-As-You-Go” service currently available from Jeppesen.

14 But we also need to keep the charts updated!
The Paris & Tokyo MoU’s states that Port State Control has to check that the Charts in use are updated. So how do we ensure that this is the case?

15 Three options for updating charts
CD/DVD NtM: CD/DVD New charts: CD/DVD Online NtM: Online New charts: CD/DVD Online+ NtM: Online New charts: Online

16 Option 1: DVD CD/DVD NtM: CD/DVD
The physical DVD is sent to the ship at regular intervals Up to 3 months or more before it arrives Out of Date even before it is installed Not such a good option for ENC and paperless navigation CD/DVD NtM: CD/DVD New charts: CD/DVD

17 Option 2: Online Updating Service
Downloads Notices to Mariners Only Can use direct Internet connection or 2000 systems connected 7600 times in March 2010. Average file size sent was 200kb This option also requires an new monthly DVD Online NtM: Online New charts: CD/DVD

18 Option 3: Online+ Updating Service
Creates the complete latest database onboard Requires a Broadband connection (VSAT, Fleet, Wi-Fi etc.) 1200 requests to the service in March 2010. Can be transferred to the ECDIS by DVD or USB Pen Available as a windows task bar application Online+ NtM: Online New charts: Online

19 Average weekly data transfer

21 Summary Choose a reputable ECDIS manufacturer with worldwide service
Choose an ECDIS that not only meets the minimum performance standards, or is cheapest, but also gives you other useful information and functionality. Choose an ECDIS that supports a good distribution & licensing service - it will greatly simplify everyone’s day to day work. Choose an ECDIS with the latest technology such as intergrated communications, direct chart updating and information overlays. Choose more than just an ECDIS – choose an ECDIS that can give you more!
