Create Themes A document that you create in Word is based on the Normal.dotm template. This template provides your document with default layout, formatting, styles, and theme formatting. The default template provides a number of built-in or predesigned themes. You have used some of these built-in themes to apply colors, fonts, and effects to content in documents. The same built-in themes are available in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Having these themes available across applications allows you to brand business files—such as documents, workbooks, databases, and presentations—with a consistent and uniform appearance.

You can switch from the default theme (called Office) to one of the built-in themes or you can create your own custom theme. A theme you create will display in the Themes drop-down gallery in the Custom section.
