2. Main stakeholders of regional statistics
National Statistical Institutes
National Statistical Institutes compile the data. Each NSI appoints a Regional Statistics Co-ordinator (RESCO) who co-ordinates the work at national level and who is in direct contact with Eurostat.

The mission in the Directorate General for Regional Policy is to strengthen economic, social and territorial cohesion by reducing disparities in the level of development among regions and Member States. Cohesion Policy has already played an important role in the development of Europe's towns and cities. This role will expand in the new programming period as the urban dimension is integrated into the operational programmes proposed by the Member States and co-financed by the Structural Funds.
The Community Strategic Guidelines on cohesion specifies that actions with a focus on urban areas can take different forms:
