3 Colour - brown Brownfield sites: areas of land in the town or city that have previously been built on and used for something else e.g. industrial sites, warehouses or docks. These areas can be cleared, cleaned up and used again. Advantages: easier to get planning permission Services already in place Roads already there Disadvantages: Land may be polluted and expensive to clean up Land may be expensive if it’s close to the city centre Site may not be large enough Area around it may not be very attractive

8 Colour - green Greenfield sites: land that has previously not been built on, usually found on the edge of the town or city i.e. green fields May be Green Belt land – land that is protected from development by planning regulations. Advantages: Easier and quicker to prepare for building on Land is cheaper than close to the centre Area around may be attractive Disadvantages: Countryside is lost to houses and roads Wildlife is threatened Roads and service need to be provided
