Introduction to Bonding
Chemical Bonding
2
What is a Chemical Bond? Attractive force between atoms or ions that binds them together as a unit The bond is caused by the electromagnetic force attraction between opposite charges May form by the attraction between a positive nucleus and a negative electrons or the attraction between a positive ion and a negative ion
3
CHEMICAL BONDING Why bond?
Atoms try to acquire particularly stable electron configuration for their outer electrons (Increase stability) form ions or molecules Most stable configuration for outer electrons is noble gas configuration (octet structure) Strategies to achieve more stable configuration: give away electrons accept electrons share electrons
4
Types of Bonds: Types of bonds: ionic bond covalent bond metallic bond
5
Strength of Chemical Bonds
The strength of chemical bonds varies considerably "strong bonds" covalent or ionic bonds "weak bonds" dipole-dipole interactions and hydrogen bonding
