Plant and Animal Cells
2
Science Essential Question
How does a system of living and non-living things operate to meet the needs of the organisms in an ecosystem? Science Essential Question
3
Something to Think About:
How are the life processes carried out by an individual cell like the life processes carried out by living things?
4
In this lesson, we will… Distinguish between the basic structures and functions of plant and animal cells. Identify the major parts of plant and animal cells, such as the nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall, and cytoplasm. Compare and contrast basic structures and functions of plant and animal cells.
5
What are cells? A cell is the basic unit that makes up all living things. Cells are so small that you can see them only with a microscope. Cells carry out life processes.
6
Some things that have parts such as:
A house A school Football stadium A hospital A car A clock
7
What are the parts of a school?
Cafeteria Library Office Classrooms Bathrooms All Purpose Room Art Room Music Room Just as a school has parts, cells also have parts. Some parts are the same in both plant cells and animal cells.
8
Plant and Animal Cells These parts are used to carry out different life processes. Remember the life processes – (MRS GREN).
9
You can work with a partner to complete this activity.
Venn Diagram: Differences and Similarities between animal and plant cells At this time, complete the Venn Diagram using pages A8 and A9 to help you. You can work with a partner to complete this activity.
10
Checking In: All organisms, or living things, are made of __________.
Cells Cool stuff unicellular
11
What is inside an animal cell?
nucleus cytoplasm Cell membrane mitochondria vacuoles Animal Cell Organelles: Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Nucleus Mitochondria Vacuoles
12
What is inside an animal cell?
Cell Membrane The cell membrane acts like a skin that holds the cell together. It is the outer layer of an animal cell. Cell membrane
13
What is inside an animal cell?
Cytoplasm Cytoplasm is a jellylike material that fills the cell. The other parts of the cell float in the cytoplasm. cytoplasm
14
What is inside an animal cell?
Nucleus: The nucleus in the control center of the cell. nucleus
15
What is inside an animal cell?
Mitochondria: The mitochondria are the power sources of a cell They break down food to release energy. mitochondria
16
What is inside an animal cell?
Vacuole: The vacuole is a storage container for food, nutrients, or wastes. Animal cells have many small vacuoles. Plant cells have a few large vacuoles. vacuoles
17
Checking In: Both plant and animal cells perform life processes by using ___________. Its parts Cell division organelles multicellular
18
Checking In: The cell’s control center is called the ________.
mitochondria Cell membrane nucleus cytoplasm
19
Draw and label a diagram of an animal cell (Handout)
nucleus cytoplasm cell membrane mitochondria vacuoles
20
What is inside the plant cell?
vacuole nucleus chloroplasts cell membrane cell wall cytoplasm Plant cells have many of the same organelles as animal cells. often have a box-like shape are often a bit larger than animal cells have additional organelles that animal cells do not have mitochondria
21
What is inside the plant cell?
vacuole nucleus chloroplasts cell membrane cell wall cytoplasm Plant cell organelles Nucleus Cell membrane Vacuole Cytoplasm Mitochondria Chloroplast Cell wall mitochondria
22
What is inside the plant cell?
Cell wall Additional outer covering, outside the cell membrane Stiff structure Provides strength and extra support cell wall
23
What is inside the plant cell?
Vacuole Unlike animal cells, plants usually have one LARGE central vacuole. Stores excess water to keep the plant from drying out Releases extra water when the plant needs it Provides extra support vacuole
24
What is inside the plant cell?
Chloroplast Plants make their own food inside chloroplasts Green structure Energy from the sunlight is used to produce food for the plant inside the chloroplast Plants are green because they contain a green chemical, chlorophyll chloroplasts
25
What is inside the plant cell?
Chloroplast Chlorophyll is able to use the energy in sunlight to make food Plants that do not have chloroplasts (with the green chemical chlorophyll), are not green. Chloroplasts are mainly found in the cells of leaves and stems of plants. chloroplasts
26
Checking In: The food making factory of plants is the ______________.
mitochondria chloroplast nucleus cytoplasm
27
Checking In: The green chemical inside the chloroplast is called __________. cytoplasm chloroplast nucleus chlorophyll
28
Checking In: Chloroplast use energy from the ________ to make food.
vacuole mitochondria sun chlorophyll
29
Checking In: Which organelle does the plant cell have but the animal does not? vacuole mitochondria cell wall cytoplasm
30
Checking In: Which organelle does the plant cell have but the animal does not? chloroplast mitochondria cell membrane cytoplasm
31
Checking In: Which organelle is the control center for the plant?
chloroplast mitochondria nucleus vacuole
32
Checking In: Which organelle supplies energy for the cell? chloroplast
mitochondria nucleus vacuole
33
Draw and label a diagram of a plant cell (Handout)
vacuole nucleus chloroplasts cell membrane cell wall cytoplasm mitochondria
