2 Varieties Groups: Herding, Toy, Non-sporting, Hounds, Terriers, Working, Sporting Purebred – Mom and dad belong to same breed Pedigree – record of ancestry Mix breed (Mutt) – Mom and dad have 2 or more breeds among them

3 Characteristics Dogs are one of the most popular pets in the world
Dogs exist in a wide range of sizes, colors, and temperaments

4 Housing Dogs have been domesticated and should live indoors with human affection Certain breeds can adapt to outside living with proper protection from the elements Exercise is necessary for most dogs. Amount of exercise needed varies according to the size of the animal, age, breed and what the dog is being used for.

Shelter – 3-4 million animals euthanized each year Puppy stores are bad – they get dogs from puppy mills RESEARCH breed and experience dogs energy level before adopting DON’T BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE

8 Health Zoonotic diseases – can be transmitted from animal to human ( Infectious diseases (caused by virus, bacteria, microorganisms): Canine distemper, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Kennel cough (bordetella), Rabies, Coronavirus Noninfectious diseases (caused by genetics, environment) – Heart disease, Hip dysplasia, Cherry eye, Anal glands Ringworm – Fungus Parasites internal – Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms, Tapeworms, Heartworms external – Fleas, ticks, Mites
