1 Welcome! November 1st, 2017 Wednesday
Do Now Get out your weekly Bell Ringer sheet and begin working on Wednesday’s assignment. Once the bell rings, you will have five minutes to discuss the prompt with your group. Make sure you stay on task!  Remember: Do Now's are INDEPENDENT and QUIET exercises. Thank you 

3 Journal Heading At the top of your paper, you need: Your name 11/1/17
CP10 American Lit/Block “Transcendentalism in Music”

4 Transcendentalism in lyrics
Today we’re going to explore transcendentalism in more modern works – specifically, transcendentalism in music! For the first twenty minutes of class, we’re going to listen to, read, and analyze the lyrics to Johnny Cash’s “The Highway Man.” First, just listen to the song and read along.

5 “Highway Man” ANalysis
Take a moment to respond to the questions on your handout. In 10 minutes, we’ll discuss. What’s happening in the song? What happens to the character in each stanza? How does each character connect? How is “Highway Man” similar to the excerpts we read yesterday from Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself? What do you think Whitman would have thought of “Highway Man”? In what way(s) does this song portray the Transcendentalist philosophy? Refer to specific textual evidence to back up your response. If you were directing the music video to this song, what would your video show during each stanza? Be specific (and creative!) 

6 If you finish, feel free to work on your IXL for the week: D.5
Lyric Scavenger Hunt I have the lyrics to nine songs hidden around the classroom. Today, your job is to find them, determine if they reflect any Transcendentalist values, and provide a piece of textual evidence that supports your conclusion. Make sure you fill out your chart as you go. Happy hunting! 
