Body Paragraphs Thesis:
George Orwell, author of Animal Farm, uses satire– specifically an absurd tone and ironic narration– to create his social commentary about power and corruption; this demonstrates Lord Acton’s idea “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” What examples/evidence could my body paragraphs introduce? Ask students what each body paragraph would be about

Body Thesis Statements
George Orwell, author of Animal Farm, uses satire– specifically an absurd tone and ironic narration– to create his social commentary about power and corruption; this demonstrates Lord Acton’s idea “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Sample Body Thesis Statements: One example of a scene with an absurd tone is when the pigs betray Animalism and begin walking on two legs– this satirical commentary leads the reader to believing the entirety of the pigs have become corrupt. Ask students what each body paragraph would be about

Another example of ironic narration in Animal Farm occurs when the narrator subtly lets the reader know that the animals are stupid– matching Orwell’s feelings about the Russian people under Stalin. Ask students what each body paragraph would be about

Integrated Quotation as evidence (TLQ) 2-3 sentences of Analysis Explain what it means IF UNCLEAR or provide context to story. Explain your citation’s relation to the thesis Make a leap in explaining the connections, conclusions, cause and effect, literary term, and/or links to thesis “so what” Repeat B and C with new evidence if able/needed Transition to next body paragraph

2-3 sentences of Analysis per evidence
2-3 sentences of Analysis/Elaboration/Commentary ONLY IF UNCLEAR: explain what it means in context to narrative. Elaboration Interpret evidence’s deeper meaning From literal/narrative to figurative or analytical meanings Explain your citation’s relation to the claim How is your evidence an example of your arguable claim? Justify its value and relevance to your point Make a ‘leap’ in explaining: Connections Conclusions cause and effect literary term Explain the connection of evidence to thesis’ “so what” ANALYSIS IS FROM YOUR BRAIN– not things explicitly said in the text.
