How do we assess the process of science skills?
Two components for the focus of this discussion: Doing the process of science The understanding of how we know what we know (how scientists know what they know). Misconception: experimentation is not the only way of knowing. Students come into a lab environment with a traditional method of investigating a problem. We need to expand on the discussion of how to encourage students to describe how they know what they know… By: Pre- and Post assessment of a data visualization through observation, interpretation, and understanding the methods of how the data was collected. Measuring observation through description of the data by first using a non-science example (a cartoon) and then move to a science example. What evidence would be convincing to an instructor that a student understands interpretation? The interpretation will depend on the level of preconceptions students have.
