2 What is Safe Drinking Water Act?
The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) is the federal law that protects public drinking water supplies throughout the nation. Under the SDWA, EPA sets standards for drinking water quality and with its partners implements various technical and financial programs to ensure drinking water safety. Congress enacted the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1974 and reauthorized in 1986 and 1996 and the standards only apply to public water systems.

3 Continue... Under the Act, EPA also establishes minimum standards for state programs to protect underground sources of drinking water from endangerment by underground injection of fluids. Under this Act, EPA is also required to set federal drinking water standards, known as Maximum Contaminant Levels, and to establish monitoring procedures that water systems have to follow. Under the 1986 Amendments, EPA was required to set new drinking water standards for 83 named contaminants such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia Lamblia.
