12 Class Golden Rule No single member of the class is more important than THE CLASS

13 Homework and Classwork Policy
We operate a (mostly) paperless classroom using Edmodo. A paperless classroom allows you to get immediate feedback on all tests and quizzes. Essays and other written response items are submitted electronically. This gives you access to your work all year long. Assignments are LOCKED after the due date. Homework is usually assigned ONCE a week Homework is assigned on a Monday. Homework is due on Friday.

14 Things to Know Website: winsomerichards.weebly.com

15 Class Expectations What is the appropriate response?
Trey Carter raised his hand to tell the teacher an irrelevant story about his father. Although the class was working on an essay, he chose to toss paper across the room. When he was reprimanded, he returned to his seat but began making strange noises to distract others. Finally he was removed from the class. The next day his mother sent a scathing demanding to know why her son was being denied an education. On the first day of school, the homeroom class entered the room while the teacher stood at the door on hallway duty. Each student retrieved an independent reading text and began reading. The student seemed totally unconcerned about events in the hallway. What is the appropriate response? What can the teacher infer about these students?

16 Class Expectations How should the teacher respond?
Julia Herrera came sobbing to the teacher, claiming that she forgot her homework. She insisted that she had done the work, but she left it in her room. The teacher told her to submit the work the next day. Minutes later, Jose Martinez told the teacher that he too forgot his homework. The teacher simply told him he would be getting a zero. Angrily, he cried, “That’s not fair! You should treat us all the same!” The teacher declared, “Treating everyone the same would be a foolish thing to do.” Steven Young came to class unprepared. Everyday he would stare blankly at the walls or some days he would draw cartoon figures on the desk. After multiple attempts at trying to engage Steven, the teacher was completely frustrated. It seemed nothing worked. One afternoon, after an especially difficult day, Steven finally decided to tell the teacher how he felt. “Listen, if I don’t want to learn, you can’t make me.” Is the teacher being fair or does Jose have a point? How should the teacher respond?

17 Class Expectations What inference can the teacher make?
Tonya did not understand why the teacher was getting so worked up. Using the “f” word every now and again was no big deal; and so what if she talked back to the teacher? Her parents told her to stand up for herself. When the teacher told her to call home, she rolled her eyes. “Hey Mom? Yeah…I don’t know she told me call you I guess…” Ron Goldman’s brother died in a tragic accident. Dealing with the loss of an older brother was especially hard, but he was trying to stay focused. He didn’t hear half of what the teachers were saying on most days. It was just so difficult to focus. He even forgot to do the project which had been assigned in Science class. When his teacher asked him about it, he simply shrugged. What inference can the teacher make? What should Ron do?
