4. Purpose of Damage Control
Take all practical preliminary measures to prevent damage.
Minimize and localize damage as it occurs.
Accomplish emergency repairs as quickly as possible, restore equipment to operation, and care for injured personnel.
The ships ability to perform it’s mission will depend on Damage Control effectiveness!

Purpose: To maintain Watertight Integrity

Tighten in same sequence with a wrench

Purpose: Provides different degree of water-tightness and protection for the ship
Has three degrees of readiness: X Y Z

13. X X-Ray Classification Provides least amount of protection.
Condition set in well protected harbors.
Condition set at home during normal working hours.

14. Y Yoke Classification Offers moderate amount of protection.
Condition set at sea.
Condition set in port outside of regular working hours.

15. Z Zebra Classification Provides maximum protection during battle.
Condition set for fire or flooding.
Condition set when entering or leaving port in wartime.
All open watertight doors must be guarded. Z

16. Damage Control Classifications
Special use classification for specific fittings on the ship:
Six different classifications: W W Y D Z Z X

17. Circle William Classification
Applied to ventilation fittings and certain access openings.
Normally open in all material conditions.
Closed only to prevent Chemical, Biological, or Radiological (CBR) contamination. W

18. William Classification
Applied to sea suction valves that supply water to condensers, fire pumps, and other equipment necessary for fire protection and mobility.
Normally open and running. W

19. Circle X-Ray/Yoke Classification
Permits access to battle stations.
Used for transfer of ammunition or are part of other vital systems.
May be opened without special permission.
Must be closed when not in use. X Y

20. Circle Zebra Classification
May be opened during general quarters to allow preparation and distribution of food.
Used for cooling vital spaces.
Guards must be posted when open for quick closing. Z

21. Dog Zebra Classification
Applied to accesses on weather decks that are not equipped with light traps or door switches that turn off lights during darkened ship conditions.
