September Meeting Take Aways
The purpose of the study is to answer the question, “In considering a number of options, is there a better way educationally and fiscally to reconfigure the grades and facilities to provide a sound instructional program now and in the future?” The study process will be open to ensure there is not a perception it is being conducted behind closed doors. The Advisory Committee was formed to assist the consultants throughout the process, but the final recommendations will be the consultants’. The district has seen declining enrollments and will likely continue to see enrollments decline. Castallo & Silky LLC-Education Consultants

Overview of the Current School/Grade Organization
7
Some of what we know….. Most school districts consider reorganization due to changes in available space Virtually any grade configuration can be found somewhere The most common grade configuration pattern in NYS is K-5, 6-8, 9-12 Castallo & Silky LLC-Education Consultants
8
Some of what we know….. Over the past 30 years there has been a shift from the K-6, 7-9, grade pattern to a K-5, 6-8, 9-12 arrangement due to the middle school movement Urban schools recently have moved more toward a K-8, 9-12 grade configuration Researchers agree there is no “one best way” to arrange the grades Castallo & Silky LLC-Education Consultants
9
Some of what we know….. A general conclusion of most researchers is that “what” a district does with the grade configuration, not “which” grade configuration it uses, is what determines student success Common issues with grade re-configuration include length of bus ride for students, impact on parent involvement, grouping students of similar developmental levels, interaction of students, and number of transitions Castallo & Silky LLC-Education Consultants

The grade configuration (K-5, 6-8, 9-12) is a common arrangement.
The most common grade configuration of schools in New York and the U.S. is K-5, 6-8, although there is no research that indicates that one grade pattern is necessarily better for student learning than another. The elementary instructional program is comparable across all four schools. The Middle School and High School programs are typical for a school district of this size.
