12 disorders to recognize
Lab Practical #2 - Match pictures to terms – No Disease Portfolio Descriptions will be on test – Use your Disease Portfolio then. Be sure the information on these Arthritis, OI, & FOP slides is included in your Disease Portfolio
3
1.____________ Complete separation of articulating bone ends
Must be careful with reduction so nerves & BV not pinched
4
2.__________ Ligament completely separates from bony attachement
5
Comparison of spinal curvatures
3 4 5 6
6
7.__________ Excessive posterior curvature of thoracic region
7
Lordosis Excessive anterior curvature of lumbar region
8
8.__________ Excessive sideways curvature
9
3rd degree muscle tear Complete tear within a muscle
10
9.__________ Define: Chronic Degenerative and non inflammatory
Who affected: aged Symptoms: Erosion of articular cartilages, contact of bone surfaces, bone spurs form that enlarge the bone ends, joint motion restricted, stiffness & pain (cont. on next page!) Major symptom: crepitus: crunching noise made by affected joints resulting from contact of roughened articular surfaces Treatment: analgesics, bedrest, moderate exercise
11
Osteoarthritis
12
10._____________________
Define: chronic inflammatory - autoimmune disorder, Who affected: women age 40+ (also a juvenile version) Symptoms: bilateral, remissions & exacerbations, synovial membrane thickens & fluid production decreases, cartilage & bone may eventually be eroded away Pannus: abnormal tissue that clings to articular cartilage – may cause joint fusion known as ANKYLOSIS Treatments: drug therapy, cold & hot packs, mild exercise to prevent fusion, joint replacement
14
11._________ Define: Hyperurecemia – buildup of sodium urate crystals
Who affected: men Symptoms: usually single joint (usually the big toe) – swollen & painful Treatments: drug therapy if continual, cold pack & analgesics, watch diet (liver, kidney, sardines, anything high in purines), avoid alcohol and excessive Vitamin C
15
12._____________________
variation of rheumatoid arthritis affects men typically begins late teens or early 20s progresses superiorly along spine causing spinal fusion
16
Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva
Genetic condition triggered by trauma Soft tissue converted to bone
17
13._____________________
Genetic: some forms are lethal in utero 8 types: Type II most severe for survivors Blue sclera, brittle bones
