2 Respectful Student Discourse
What is it? How do we get there?

3 What is “discourse”? How would you describe it?
What should it look like?

4 Respectfully disagreeing with an idea
Turn and Talk to your group (write notes on whiteboards): What are ways that you or someone you know has handled talking with someone who does not share your opinion or thought on an idea? How do you prevent a disagreement from turning into a stand-off? What are ways you can begin a statement that will show your classmate that you respect what they said, but are going to be disagreeing with them?

5 How can you ask for clarification?
Turn and talk: When a classmate (or Ms. Fowler) explains something or voices a thought that you didn’t quite understand, how do you respectfully ask for clarification? What are ways you can begin a phrase/or question to indicate that you are not understanding what was said?

6 How can you add on to an idea?
Turn and Talk: Have you ever heard something from a classmate that resonated with you and you wanted to add on? How do you handle wanting to add to the statement? How can you start a phrase when you want to add on to a thought/statement?

7 How can you ask for evidence?
Turn and Talk: Sometimes we need evidence for someone’s statement. What kind of evidence might be used to support statements? If you don’t hear evidence from your classmates, how might you ask for that evidence? What sentence/question starters could you use?
