1 “Greenhouse Components” Lecture Series
Feb 15 “Greenhouse Components” Lecture Series Greenhouse Management & Floriculture Agriculture Technology Department Plymouth High School

2 Identify the bulb flowering on the instructor’s bench.

3 TARGETS To recognize and explain three kinds of equipment that can ventilate a greenhouse To recognize and explain two kinds of equipment that can heat a greenhouse To distinguish between the four types of greenhouse covering materials (glass, polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene

4 Structural Components

5 Greenhouse Orientation
GH Orientation Greenhouse Orientation Single Above 40oN (ridge E-W) Below 40oN (ridge N-S) % Transmission Gutter Connect/Ridge and Furrow (All ridges N-S) *N-S is best for snow removal Wisconsin is between 44O and 45O Latitude Midwinter Summer North-South (N-S) 48% 64% East-West (E-W) 71% 66%

6 Frame Materials treated or untreated Wood Iron—Steel—Aluminum
Galvanization From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Hot-dip galvanizing is a form of galvanization. It is the process of coating iron, steel, or aluminum with a thin zinc layer, by passing the metal through a molten bath of zinc at a temperature of around 860 °F (460 °C). When exposed to the atmosphere, the pure zinc (Zn) reacts with oxygen (O2) to form zinc oxide (ZnO), which further reacts with carbon dioxide (CO2) to form zinc carbonate (ZnCO3), a usually dull grey, fairly strong material that stops further corrosion in many circumstances, protecting the steel below from the elements. Galvanized steel is widely used in applications where rust resistance is needed, and can be identified by the crystallization patterning on the surface (often called a “spangle”). Zn coating reacts with O2 = ZnO ZnO reacts with CO2 to make ZnCO3 (zinc carbonate)
