5 NAME THAT MODE You will read three texts about the Great Depression and consider how the event seems to have affected the individual people who lived through it. Then ,you will write an essay explaining your thinking. For the essay, you will use the following as your focus question: According to the texts, what effect did the Great Depression have on people who lived through it? Be sure to use evidence from the texts to support and develop your thinking.

6 NAME THAT MODE Countries around the world set attendance laws and educational standards for their school aged children. Parents struggle to create healthy and educated students. After reading “In Afghanistan, School is a Luxury that Many Working Children Cannot Afford” and “More and More Students Suffer from Anxiety” write an essay in which you identify the problems of unequal educational opportunities and expectations and propose a solution to the problems. Support your position with evidence from both texts.

7 NAME THAT MODE Read the passages about student activities and the students who are regularly involved in campus groups. Then, write a multi-paragraph story about a student who is actively involved in school activities.

8 NAME THAT MODE After reading the articles, “Password Protected” and “Phone Patrol,” use information from both articles to write an essay in which you address the following question: Should officials be able to use information they obtained from private devices or social networking sites in order to protect the community? Support your position with evidence from both texts.

9 NAME THAT MODE After reading the excerpt from “Volar” and “Dream of Shoes,” write an essay explaining the intersection of Judith Cofer’s dreams with those of her mother. How do the differences between the dreams reveal the characters of mother and daughter? Include information about how the author’s specific word choices help to establish tone and mood. Draw evidence from the passage to support your analysis. Develop your topic with relevant, well-chosen facts, concrete details, or other information and examples. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in your response.
