Archibald Murphey Reformers Push Harder NC Constitution Of 1835 Humanitarian, Believed government should be used to improve peoples lives, Proposed navigation, irrigation, transportation, and education reforms in NC His proposals were listened to, but ignored. 1830’s- NC need to reform grew strong, NC losing population, Gov. Swain holds constitutional convention. Improved voting rights (everyone except women and slaves), Election of officials instead of being chosen, Western NC had more seats in the legislature.

David Walker (free black man) “An appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World” Harriet Beecher Stowe(preacher’s daughter) “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” a depiction of the cruel treatment of slaves. Nat Turner led a group of slaves to revolt in VA and NC border.

Slavery John Brown 1850s – Tension increases, Outbreaks of violence more frequent. launched a bloody raid on federal armory in Harper’s Ferry, VA, plan to start a revolution, stole guns, gave to slaves, they planned to take over arsenal, attempt led to the killing of many of Brown’s followers.
