Announcements Grading Human Body begins today (2.5 weeks)
Nervous System (2 days) Muscular System & Skeletal System (3 days) Circulatory System & Respiratory System (3 days) Digestive System (2 days) Endocrine System (1 days) Urinary System (1 day) Immune System (1 days) Test (1 day)

Nervous System What is the nervous system? What is a stimulus?
The body system responsible for helping your body respond to stimuli and act accordingly What is a stimulus? Something that causes a response in an organism or part of the body
5
Question 1: Give an example of a stimulus.
6
Question 2: What ORGANS do you think would be involved in gathering information from stimuli?
7
Question 3: What ORGANS do you think would be involved in responding to stimuli?

Parts of the Nervous System
Brain: the organ of the body in the head that controls functions, movements, sensations, and thoughts Spinal Cord: the large group of nerves which runs through the center of the spine and carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body Nerves/Nervous Tissue: one of the many thin parts that control movement and feeling by carrying messages between the brain and other parts of the body
9
Breaking it down… Central Nervous System: Brain, Spinal Cord
Peripheral Nervous System: Nerves (sends messages to and from Spinal Cord and Brain
10
Autonomic Nervous System
Autonomic Nervous System: regulates the functions of our internal organs such as the heart, stomach and intestines (Involuntary) Question Four: Name some examples of functions regulated by the AUTONOMIC nervous system.
11
Somatic Nervous System
Somatic Nervous System: Sends sensory information throughout the body and sends messages to your muscles for movement (VOLUNTARY) Somatic Nervous System

Warm UP!!! (Scrap sheet…write the Questions)
Name three activities controlled by the autonomic nervous system. What are the three parts of the nervous system? Would you like to have a life where you did not experience any physical pain? Why or why not?

Diseases of the nervous System
CIPA/Tourettes
17
While you are watching the videoS…Think about these questions….
How does this disease impact this person physically? Emotionally? Mentally? How does this disease impact this person’s family? If you had this disease, how would it impact you and your life? How does this nervous system disease prevent the body from maintaining homeostasis?
18
Feeling No Pain
19
Tourette’s Syndrome
20
Nervous system Demonstration
Take a look at this nerve cell…. It looks very different From “normal” cells Why do you think these cells are long and skinny? What is the main job of the nerve cells? How would this long thin shape help it do its job? Demonstration
21
Demonstration Volunteers Needed!!!
Please remember to keep the noise level to a minimum!
22
Nervous System Connections
23
Nervous System Connections
How does the nervous system connect to: The digestive system? The muscular system? The endocrine system? The respiratory system? The circulatory system?
