1
Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems
CHAPTER 29
3
Three part of the brain 1) cerebrum 2) cerebellum 3) brain stem.
4
Each hemisphere has 4 lobes 1) frontal 2) parietal 3) temporal and 4) occipital.
5
The cerebrum is the part of the brain that interprets signals from your body and generates responses.
6
There are 2 cerebral hemispheres – left and right, which are connected by the corpus callosum. Each hemisphere controls the opposite side of the body.
8
The cerebellum coordinates movements
The cerebellum coordinates movements. It facilitates balance and posture.
9
The brainstem connects the brain to the spinal chord and controls the most basic activities required for life (breathing and heartbeat).
10
The spinal cord is a ropelike bundle of neurons (nerve cells)
The spinal cord is a ropelike bundle of neurons (nerve cells). It connects the brain to the nerves found throughout the body.
12
The spinal cord also controls involuntary movements called reflexes.
13
The somatic nervous system – part of the PNS that regulates voluntary movements.
14
The autonomic nervous system – part of the PNS that regulates involuntary movements.
15
The sympathetic nervous system - part of the autonomic nervous system that prepares the body for action and stress (fight or flight response).
17
The parasympathetic nervous system - part of the autonomic nervous system that calms the body and helps to conserve energy.
