1 What can we infer from this source about the level of opposition to Hitler’s ideas?
Story: Here is August Landmesser. In he had been a loyal Nazi in the early ‘30s until he fell in love with Irma, a young Jewish woman he met on the way to work in When the Nazi party found out about the relationship, he was expelled from the party. The Nuremburg Laws were then introduced, stopping ‘Aryans’ marrying Jews. They lived together anyway and had a baby daughter. In 1938, as the dehumanistaion progressed, August decided to try and flee the country with his family - they were arrested at the border and charged with ‘dishonouring the race’ (Nuremburg Law). In 1938 he was arrested and sent to a concentration camp for three years. His wife, pregnant with their second child, and his baby were arrested at the same time and send to one of the earliest death camps, where they were murdered. August, on his release, was forced to join the German army in 1944, was sent to the eastern front - no records survive of what happened to him next. This photo was taken in 1936 as Hitler launched a new battleship near where he worked - just after he had met Irma - has become an iconic photo.

2 Evidence of opposition: Jokes
Hitler visits a lunatic asylum. The patients give the Hitler salute. As he passes down the line he comes across a man who isn’t saluting. “Why aren’t you saluting like the others?” Hitler barks. “Mein Führer, I’m the nurse," comes the answer. "I’m not crazy!”

3 Someone died for this one...
Hitler and Göring are standing on top of Berlin’s radio tower. Hitler says he wants to do something to cheer up the people of Berlin. “Why don’t you just jump?” suggests Göring.

4 Recorded in the death camps
“Two Jews are about to be shot. Suddenly the order comes to hang them instead. One says to the other “Good news! You see, they’re running out of bullets.”

5 TWO men meet. “Nice to see you’re free again
TWO men meet. “Nice to see you’re free again. How was the concentration camp?” “Great! Breakfast in bed, a choice of coffee or chocolate, and for lunch we got soup, meat and dessert. And we played games in the afternoon before getting coffee and cakes. Then a little snooze and we watched movies after dinner.” The man was astonished: “That’s great! I recently spoke to Meyer, who was also locked up there. He told me a different story.” The other man nods gravely and says: “Yes, well that’s why they’ve picked him up again.”

6 Did all Germans follow Hitler’s ideas?
Knowledge: Be able to identify and describe two youth movements who opposed Nazi Ideas. Explain in detail the key features of the White Rose Movement. Consider the motives for the different groups in opposing Hitler - was it in any way because of the dehumanisation of the Jews ATL Skills Research: Note taking from a audio-visual source. Note taking from a web site.

7 Taking notes from a web page...
Problems? Solutions? Problems: Too much info, not sure what looking for, hyperlinks, distractions elsewhere. Solutions: Google Doc - copy and past article in. At the top, write wht you are focusing on finding out. As you go highlight any sections yiu think are really helpful, leave as much as you can. Focus on topic sentences, model.

8 Try: GROUP NOTE TAKING - SHARE A DOC BETWEEN TWO/THREE
Copying and pasting article into Google Doc. (Title - White Rose / Edelweiss Pirates) Write your research focus at the top - How did the White Rose / Pirates Resist? Were they successful? Why did they resist? Highlight each question in a different colour. Read the article - match the information to the question by using colours. Be willing to leave some blank as being not that useful. Review - using CUT and paste insert your highlighted bits into a table with 3 headings. Tidy up / rephrase-delete rest

9 Evidence for and against:
WAS THERE YOUTH OPPOSITION TO NAZI IDEAS BECAUSE OF THE DEHUMANISATION OF THE JEWS?
