3 DRAMA TERMS Tragedy: a type of drama in which the characters experience reversals of fortune, usually for the worse. In tragedy, catastrophe and suffering await many of the characters, especially the hero Tragic hero: a privileged, exalted character of high status, who, by virtue of a tragic flaw and fate, suffers a fall from glory into suffering Tragic flaw: a weakness or limitation of character, resulting in the fall of the tragic hero Hubris: excessive pride or self-confidence

4 DRAMA TERMS Dramatic Irony: a situation in the story in which the audience knows something that the characters do not know Foil: a character who contrasts and parallels the main character in a play or story (think: yin and yang; Benvolio and Tybalt from Romeo and Juliet) Dialogue: two or more characters engaged in conversation with each other

5 DRAMA TERMS Aside: words spoken by an actor directly to the audience, which are not "heard" by the other characters on stage during a play Monologue: a speech delivered by one person to others on stage, or a long one-sided conversation Soliloquy: when a character voices their thoughts out loud when they are alone or when they think that they are alone on stage. This helps the audience to know what is going on in the character’s mind

7 CONTENT TERMS Plebeian: (in ancient Rome) a member of the lower social classes; a commoner Triumvirate: a political regime dominated by three powerful individuals (rule of three) Republic: a state or country in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has elected or nominated leaders rather than a monarch

8 CONTENT TERMS Democracy: government by the people, especially rule of the majority, in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections Veni Vidi Vici: a Latin phrase meaning "I came; I saw; I conquered," popularly attributed to Julius Caesar and used to refer to a swift, conclusive victory. Falling Sickness: an archaic term for epilepsy, a condition that causes seizures

9 CONTENT TERMS Soothsayer: a person supposed to be able to foresee the future Discourse: written or spoken communication or debate Orator: a public speaker, especially one who is eloquent or skilled Mutiny: a situation in which a group of people refuse to obey orders and try to take control away from the person who commands them
