ASHRAE Connects with Students
In Manila, 148 students from seven Region XIII chapters – Slide #18 Being ASHRAE President led to the wonderful chance to meet students like you all over the world. An ASHRAE student event in Manila was held in conjunction with the Region XIII CRC in August 2015. 148 students from seven chapters throughout the region participated. For many of these students it was a first opportunity to meet ASHRAE executives…. and to be personally exposed to ASHRAE‘s Technical capability
19
How can you participate?
Chapter Activities Networking Develop cooperative skills on committees Exchange knowledge with industry professionals Slide #19 Chapters sponsor all student branches and encourage attendance at their meetings– sometimes providing subsidized or free meals. Networking with industry professionals occurs at these meetings and is a first point of contact for interaction with the HVAC&R industry Chapter committee participation allows soft skills development and knowledge exchange. Examples are, Leadership, management and organizing activities Chapters offer subsidies to attend ASHRAE conferences and training programs. Participation is up to you

Student Design Competition
ASHRAE sponsors an annual competition to give students practical HVAC experience. Teams may compete in one of four categories: HVAC Design Calculations HVAC System Selection Integrated Sustainable Building Design (ISBD) Applied Engineering Challenge Prizes available: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Rising Star Slide #20 The annual design competition Requires all teams to design or select systems for the same building in the same climate zone or to design a sustainable building using an integrated design approach. Teams compete in 1 of 4 categories: HVAC Design Calculations looks for good application of ASHRAE standards 55, 62.1 and 90.1 HVAC System Selection focuses on applying Std as well as the USGBC LEED rating system Integrated Sustainable Building Design (ISBD) category is for integrated architecture and engineering And Emphasizes students working together toward a net zero building design The applied Engineering Challenge changes annually to encourage student led groups to To find solutions to comfort cooling and water challenges in regional or local communities Chapter members will assist student teams with their chosen projects. To learn more go to under the drop down menu Membership and Conferences go to the Student Zone

Benchmarking and Assessment of Energy Performance for Existing Buildings
University or college senior-level undergraduate or graduate course, developed by ASHRAE, on building energy auditing and analysis using the ASHRAE Building EQ rating system as a learning framework. Students will experience project-based learning through hands-on engineering in real buildings under the guidance of industry professionals. See: ASHRAE has developed a new university course on building energy auditing and analysis using the ASHRAE Building EQ rating system as a learning framework. This course is a traditional three-credit college course for upper-level undergraduate or graduate students with previous coursework in both thermal sciences (or building physics) and building mechanical/electrical systems. Potential students could be in engineering, engineering technology, architecture, construction management, or environmental studies. The course: Involves 10 weeks of classroom instruction followed by 5 weeks of hands-on field work in teams under the guidance of local industry mentors. Revolves around a representative campus or community building for each student team Is intended to be a partnership between local ASHRAE organizations and an academic department and instructor. , ASHRAE can provide professional mentors for student teams as well as a potential co-instructor with extensive domain knowledge for the course. Buildings for energy auditing could be provided through the institution’s Facilities Management organization or could be drawn from local community facilities (e.g., homeless shelters, public housing, food banks). Additional information is available on thewebsite
