What is Green Building A Better Way to build! Designed well. Built with craftsmanship. Built sustainable (durable and provides lower maintenance). Designed and built resource and energy efficient. Financially makes sense. Green Building is not a silver bullet answer but a thousand silver BBs. What does green mean to you? ©2018 Harding Design and Construction

Good Design: Passive Heating and Cooling
November 18 Good Design: Passive Heating and Cooling It helps to understand prevailing winds such as ocean breezes which flow in low windows and out high windows. Passive solar cooling can reduce or even eliminate the need for air conditioning in homes. At its simplest, passive cooling includes overhangs for south-facing windows, few windows on the west, shade trees, thermal mass and cross ventilation. Some of the same strategies that help to heat a home in the winter also cool it in the summer. Make the layout work: rooms that need light and warmth should be located in the southeast. Rooms used later in the day should face west and utility areas on the North. ©2018 Harding Design and Construction

Design is Universal and Timeless
Design to make things easier for everybody for multiple generations, no matter your needs Examples: Zero step entrances. Levered handles instead of knobs that twist on doors. Single story living. Open floor plans. Good lighting. ©2018 Harding Design and Construction .

Green Building – Energy Efficiency and Craftsmanship
Energy and resource efficient The building uses less electricity, natural gas, and less water. Lowers utility bills and allows for renewable energy systems to be sized smaller Protects and preserves good indoor air quality for the occupants (off gassing and outdoor pollutants) ©2018 Harding Design and Construction .

Resources - Nine Ways to Know Green When You See It
Green Attribute Applies To Explanation 4. Renewable Product Raw materials can be replicated relatively quickly 5. Recycled Content Post-industrial vs. Post-Consumer. 6. Recyclability Content of product is recyclable and can be disposed of safely or reused in manufacturing. Recycled vs. Recyclable ©2018 Harding Design and Construction
