Towards a 2026 STEM Education: Implications of Convergent Science for K-12 STEM Teacher Preparation in the Face of Changing Demographics Shirley M. Malcom, Director AAAS Education & Human Resources Programs

2 About the 2018 Noyce Summit Theme
2026 refers to the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Since 2016, government agencies and organizations have been focusing on the vision for education (including STEM education) and research by 2026 (United States Semiquincentennial Commission Act of 2016) NSF’s 10 Big Ideas for Research Investment (Jim Lewis will speak on this in more detail) 2014 NAS report, Convergence: Facilitating Transdisciplinary Integration of Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Engineering, and Beyond (Cato Laurencin participated in this NAS study group)

3 Some goals for undergraduate student interdisciplinary learning, regardless of field, from the NAS Convergence report Develop in students the intellectual capacity to deal with real, complex problems. Build student confidence and willingness to approach problems from multiple perspectives. Build student ability to communicate with scientists from other disciplines. Develop student ability to make decisions in the face of uncertainty (reflective judgment). Help students understand strengths and limitations of different disciplinary perspectives.

5 The 2018 Noyce Summit plenary and discussion sessions are designed to explore the Implications of NSF’s Research and NAS’s Convergence Visions for K-12 STEM Teacher Preparation for High Needs Schools, including: How can STEM teacher preparation programs show the deeper connections among STEM fields within each course, including connections to societal challenges and the risks and benefits of science? What new courses or labs or experiences are needed to help prospective teachers be prepared to make deeper connections across STEM fields in the K-12 classroom? What experiences need to be provided to help teachers understand how to use culturally responsive connections to engage diverse learners?
